Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical—a two-and-a-half hour event that blends live actors with the on-screen action of the classic film—is currently playing Evolution London in Battersea Park through September 7. Get a first look at the production in the gallery below.
At the event, a screen plays the 1978 Grease film while a 30-member cast and live band perform such songs as "You’re the One That I Want," "Beauty School Dropout," "Greased Lightnin'," "Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee," "Summer Nights," and "We Go Together," among others.
Liam Morris leads the T Birds as Danny, alongside Liam Buckland as Kenickie, Andilé Mabhena as Putsie, Darragh Rochford as Doody, and Myles Thomas as Sonny. Donning Pink Ladies jackets are Stephanie Costi as Sandy, Lucy Penrose as Rizzo, Toni Pais as Marty, Brooke Ramsay as Jan, and Gerardine Sacdalan as Frenchie, who appear alongside schoolmates Imogen Kingsley-Smith as Patty Simcox and Jacob Stebbings as Eugene Felsnic.
Imposing order on the halls of Rydell High are staff members Colleen Daley as Principal McGee, Julie Cloke as her secretary Blanche, and Rhys Owen as Coach Calhoun with David Fearn as Teen Angel/Choir Master and Waylon Jacobs as TV teen-dance show host Vince Fontaine.
The company is completed by Morgan Baulch, Dylan Blake-Colbet, Ziki Buswell, Erin Corfield, Leah Dane, Bella Donald, CJ Driver, David Heal, Reece Kerridge, Sunny Lee, Kelly Mbarga, Rose Mary O’Reilly, and Aaron Shales.
Bringing the 1950s-themed event to life are director Matthew Costain, set designer Tom Rogers, choreographer Jennifer Weber, lighting designer Howard Hudson, sound designer Gareth Fry, video designer Ian William Galloway, casting director Grace McInerny for Pippa Ailion and Natalie Gallacher Casting, music supervisor Steve Sidwell, costume designers Susan Kulkarni and Martina Trottman, and wigs, hair, and makeup designers Farida Ghwedar and Jessie Deol.
Grease opened in Chicago in 1971 and subsequently on
Broadway in
February 1972, where it received seven Tony nominations, including one
for
Best Musical. The original Broadway production played 20 previews and
3,388 regular performances. Richard Gere starred as Danny Zuko in the
1973 London premiere. The
1978 blockbuster film adaptation co-starred John Travolta and the late Olivia
Newton-John.
