Seven-time BAFTA winner Steve Coogan began performances in the world premiere stage adaption of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove in London's West End October 8, and Playbill has the pictures to prove it.
Playing the Noël Coward Theatre for a limited run through December 21, the production sees Coogan playing multiple roles throughout the nuclear crisis comedy. Directed by Sean Foley and co-adapted by Foley and Armando Iannucci, the satire is one of Kubrick's most beloved films.
Said Coogan in a previous statement, “The idea of putting Dr. Strangelove on stage is daunting. A huge responsibility. It’s also an exciting challenge, an opportunity to bring this timeless classic to a new audience. Knowing that I will be part of a creative team led by Sean Foley and Armando Iannucci means I will be working with the best people. Sean is a master of stage comedy and Armando and I started working with each other over 30 years ago. We made some memorable comedy together so it’s great to be collaborating with him once again.”
Coogan is joined by Giles Terera as General Buck Turgisdon, John Hopkins as General Jack D. Ripper, Oliver Alvin-Wilson as Jefferson, Penny Ashmore as Vera Lynn, Ben Deery as General Staines, Richard Dempsey as Frank, Mabli Gwynne, Mark Hadfield as Faceman, Tony Jayawardena as Russian Ambassador Bakov, Tom Kelsey, Daniel Norford, Dharmesh Patel as Lincoln, Adam Sina, Alex Stoll, and Ben Turner as Colonel Bat Guano.
Foley and Iannucci lead a creative team consisting of set and costume designer Hildegard Bechtler, lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound designers and original music composers Ben and Max Ringham, projection designer Akhila Krishnan, casting director Amy Ball, illusion artist Chris Fisher, and movement director Lizzi Gee.
Dr. Strangelove is produced by Patrick Myles and David Luff, Tulchin Bartner Productions, Playful Productions, Barbara Broccoli, Jean Doumanian, Alexander “Sandy” Marshall, Playing Field, Mark Puddle, Trafalgar Theatre Productions and in association with Wild Yak. Jonathan Cameron is the Executive Producer for the Stanley Kubrick Estate.
