Mamma Mia! premiered on Broadway October 18, 2001, at the Winter Garden Theatre, where it continued through October 19, 2013. The production then transferred to the Broadhurst November 2, 2013, playing through September 12, 2015.

Since premiering in London in 1999 and subsequently on Broadway in 2001, Mamma Mia! has been seen by over 70 million people across the world, and turned into two films. The 25th anniversary North American tour recouped its cost in just 13 weeks on the road. That production played Broadway's Winter Garden August 14, 2025-February 1, 2026.

The musical is set on the eve of a wedding, as a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they had last visited 20 years ago. Songs include "Dancing Queen," "The Winner Takes It All," "Money, Money, Money," and "Take a Chance on Me."

The North American tour production team is led by associate director  Martha Banta, associate choreographer  Janet Rothermel, and associate music supervisor  David Holcenberg, along with associate scenic designer Brian Webb, associate costume designer Lucy Gaiger, associate lighting designer Ed McCarthy, associate sound designer David Patridge, and associate hair designer Jeff Knaggs.

The stage management team includes production stage manager RL Campbell, stage manager Andrew Volzer, and assistant stage manager Sauniq Lawson. The tour is booked by The Booking Group with casting by The TRC Company.

Mamma Mia! is produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East, and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal. Amy Jacobs of Bespoke Theatricals is the executive producer in association with Work Light Productions.
