Rockin' n' rollin' at the Walnut with The Big Bopper (Scott Greer) and Ritchie Valens (Miguel Jarquin-Moreland).
Directed and choreographed by Casey Hushion (assistant director of In the Heights), the limited engagement continues through July 22 in Philadelphia.
Sutton (Spamalot national tour) and Philistine (Gypsy with Bernadette Peters) lead the cast as onstage love interests Buddy Holly and Maria Elena, respectively.
The Buddy Holly Story also features Scott Greer as the Big Bopper, Anthony Lawton as Hipockets Duncan, Angela C. Howell (Buddy Holly national tour) as Vi Petty, Miguel Jarquin-Moreland (Rent national tour) as Ritchie Valens, Rachel Camp as Candy, Ned Massey as Norman Petty, Luke Smith as 4th Cricket, Jason Yachanin as Jerry Allison, Eli Zoller as Joe B. Mauldin and Danielle G. Herbert, Troy Valjean Rucker and Jim Thomas as Apollo performers. The ensemble includes Johanna Carden, Aaron Cromie, Charlie DelMarcelle, Sarah Gliko, Sarah Hund and Greg Nix. Here's how Walnut Street bills the production: "Buddy Holly was a brilliant musician who changed the face of popular music and paved the way for the next generation of rock'n'rollers. Buddy follows this superstar's meteoric rise to fame, from his humble country music roots to the top of the record charts and his untimely death in 1959."
Written by Alan Janes with music by Buddy Holly, the musical features hit songs such as "Peggy Sue," "Oh Boy," "Maybe Baby," "That'll Be the Day," "Raining In My Heart," Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba" and the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace."
Other members of the creative team include musical and vocal director John Daniels, set designer Robert Andrew Kovach, lighting designer Paul Black, costume designer Colleen Grady and sound designer Matt Kraus.
The Walnut Street Theatre is located at 825 Walnut Street in Philadelphia, PA. For more information and tickets, call (215) 574-3550 or (800) 982-2787 or visit WalnutStreetTheatre.org.
