Tony nominee Paul Hilton (The Inheritance, Lady Macbeth, Slow Horses) will play Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic this holiday season.
Matthew Warchus’ production is a Christmas classic for the London venue, adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). Running November 12, 2025-January 10, 2026, the production will officially open November 25.
Said Warchus in a statement, "I’m so excited that the great Paul Hilton will be joining us as Ebenezer Scrooge, taking the production into its ninth year. After decades of extraordinarily brilliant performances, Paul has become one of the most highly regarded and beloved actors in the world. I’ve been in awe of his work for many years, and I’m truly delighted that he’s agreed to take up the mantle of one of Dickens’ most unforgettable characters."
The creative team for A Christmas Carol includes set and costume designer Rob Howell, composer and arranger Christopher Nightingale, lighting designer Hugh Vanstone, and sound designer Simon Baker with movement by Lizzi Gee. Jamie Manton is the associate director. General casting is by David Grindrod, and Ebenezer Scrooge and original casting is by Jessica Ronane.
Since this version of A Christmas Carol opened in 2017, The Old Vic has held charity collections to raise money for various organizations fighting poverty and food deprivation. Over the last eight years, these annual collections have raised over £1.7m globally. This year's charity will be revealed at a later date.
The production made a Broadway bow in 2019, winning five 2020 Tony Awards and touring North America in 2021; it streamed internationally via the company's In Camera series in 2020, a recording that was brought back to 351 care homes across the U.K. for free last year.
