The original Broadway cast of Next to Normal—led by Tony Award winner Alice Ripley—will return to Second Stage Theater’s Tony Kiser stage (where the musical played Off-Broadway) March 25 as part of the company’s Musical Mondays concert series. Anthony Rapp (who appeared in early developmental presentations of the musical) will direct, with Rick Bertone serving as music director.
Ripley will be joined by her former co-stars Aaron Tveit, Jennifer Damiano, J. Robert Spencer, Adam Chanler-Berat, and Louis Hobson. Joining them will be Lawrence Clayton (The Color Purple), Isaac Powell (Once On This Island), Tamika Lawrence (an alum of another Kitt and Yorkey show, If/Then), Amy Spanger (who played Diana in early presentations of Next to Normal, then titled Feeling Electric), and Pearl Sun (who understudied Ripley in the show's national tour).
The celebration of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s Pulitzer-winning musical is the final installment of Second Stage’s Musical Mondays series commemorating the company’s 40th anniversary. The evening will feature concert arrangements of the show's Tony-winning score, as well as numbers cut from earlier iterations.
Earlier this month, the Tony Kiser Theater was home to concert celebrations of three other musicals produced by Second Stage: The Last Five Years, Saturday Night, and Dogfight.
