Last month, when it was announced that longtime New York Times theatre critic Jesse Green and three other arts critics were getting reassigned to other positions in the paper, many wondered what will be the future of arts coverage at the Times. It seems that arts coverage will continue at the paper, albeit in a slightly modified form. Times Culture editor Sia Michel announced September 25 that Green will now occupy the position of culture correspondent, where he will write not just about theatre, but also classical music and art.
Wrote Michel in a memo: "As a correspondent, he will write news and news analysis, features and multimedia pieces that will bring the arts to life through his vibrant writing and pursuit of new story formats."
New story formats seem to be a requirement for any arts writer at the paper now. In a still-live job posting for a theatre critic, the Times wrote that it's looking for someone who can write reviews, write critic's notebooks, appraisals and other features," can utilize "alternate story formats and multimedia," and "[join] in on podcasts and [deliver] criticism on camera."
Green has been the theatre critic at the Times since 2017. Prior, he reviewed theatre for New York Magazine.
