The original musical Spoolie Girl, co-written by Broadway alum Rosemary Loar and her late husband Robert Atwood, will run for nine performances October 17–27 at the Actors Temple Theatre Off-Broadway.
Directed by Jay Dunn, the musical follows an orphaned teenager and environmentalist as she travels from Kenya to New York City. But there's a twist: her magic curlers, or "spoolies", give her the ability to read peoples' thoughts as songs.
Says Loar about the work, "Spoolie Girl is a story with a lot of message—family, environment, social consciousness, and of course, the fun factor.”
Spoolie Girl's all-female cast includes Claire Lilley as Spoolie Girl, Elizabeth Ward Land as Spoolie Girl's Aunt, and Loar herself as the Fairy Rock Mother. The show is choreographed by Antoinette DiPietropolo, with musical direction by Michael M. Morris, lighting design by John Burkland, set design by Marina Mazzamuto, and sound design by Mark Henry.
