Part of the New Group/New Works series, the piece will be directed by associate artistic director Ian Morgan at 7 PM at the Studio Theatre in Theatre Row.
Set in 1905's Bengal, the new work follows "the late Prince Paresh Babu's children [who] are trying to keep up their father's traditional ways, though they have begun to rankle for Radha, the middle sister," according to New Group. "And a rising Hindu nationalist movement, in the person of Narendra, a family friend and a passionate advocate of reform will sweep them all — and Rhada in particular — into the tide of change."
The cast features Utkarsh Ambudkar (History of the Word), Firdous Bamji (Homebody/Kabul), Angel Desai (Company), Ed Hajj (Howard Katz), Qurrat Kadwani, Mahira Kakkar (Opus), Sanjiv Jhaveri (Sakharam Binder) and Gita Reddy.
Director Morgan recently staged the world premiere of Bernard Weinraub's The Accomplices for the company. He also heads the New Group/New Works play development program and The New Group (naked) second stage series. Other credits include Critical Darling and A Spalding Gray Matter (New Group), Progress (Immigrants Theatre Project at HERE), Ham Lake (Soho Playhouse), Ethnic Cleansing Day (Production Company at the Kraine Theatre) and plays by Candido Tirado and Adam Rapp (24 Hour Plays).
The company currently presents its extended run of Jonathan Marc Sherman's Things We Want (through Dec. 23). New Group's new season will continue with artistic director Scott Elliott staging Mike Leigh's Two Thousand Years featuring Natasha Lyonne and Richard Masur (starting Jan. 15, 2008) and Mark Brokaw staging Kevin Elyot's Mouth to Mouth (May 2008).
