The Playhouse, in fact, will open its 85th season with the hit Off-Broadway musical, which began life at the York Theatre Company before reopening at Dodger Stages Stage 5, where it now resides. Written by Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart, The Musical of Musicals will play the Laguna Playhouse July 5-Sept. 4 with an official opening July 9. No casting has been announced. Pamela Hunt, who directed and choreographed the New York production, will repeat her chores in California. The creative team will also feature the New York designers: Mary Jo Dondlinger (lighting design), John Carver Sullivan (costume design) and James Morgan (scenic design).
Featuring music by Rockwell, lyrics by Bogart and a book by Rockwell and Bogart, The Musical of Musicals is a satire of various musical theatre genres. One story is played five times, each in the style of a different musical theatre composer or team, including Rodgers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim and Kander and Ebb.
The Laguna Playhouse is located at 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach, CA. For tickets call (949) 497-2787 or visit www.lagunaplayhouse.com.
