Returning to the stage as comic alter ego Mrs. Smith herself, Hanbury is joined by "Broadway Boys" Brandon Haagenson and Ken Lear, directed by Andrew Rasmussen. An official opening night was on July 20, with an original scheduled run through Sept. 20.
"Bringing Mrs. Smith Off Broadway (even for this brief summer run) has been a hilariously wonderful and insane dream come true!" commented Rasmussen in a press statement. "Audiences and critics alike have embraced Mrs. Smith with roaring laughter, acclaim and surprising empathy, and we can’t wait to share more stories and productions with her in the future."
The show arrived Off-Broadway after previously playing performances at venues across the U.S. including the American Repertory Theatre and New York City's Laurie Beechman Theatre. The story follows Mrs. Smith, a woman on the verge of a breakdown due to her missing cat, Carlyle. To try to overcome her grief, she attempts to mount a Broadway-style musical where her bizarre life story is re-enacted in song and dance with the aid of her "Broadway Boys."
The cabaret blends classic Broadway and Hollywood hits like "One Night in Bangkok," "Cabaret" and "The Man That Got Away," with character comedy, tap dancing, puppetry, video flashbacks and more.
Hanbury's comic alter ego Mrs. Smith has performed at A.R.T's Emerging America Festival, Oberon, Berkeley Rep, 54 Below, Ars Nova, Dixon Place, Upright Citizens Brigade and numerous other notable venues throughout the country.
