Having recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of Feinstein’s/54 Below nightclub, entertainer Michael Feinstein has returned to the road for a series of concerts in California, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, Iowa—and on July 11, London.
He will perform as part of the long-running BBC series Friday Night Is Music Night at The Mermaid Theatre. Feinstein is saluting composer-lyricist Harry Warren (1893–1981), who wrote songs mainly for Hollywood movies and earning 11 Oscar nominations along the way, and winning three—for “Lullaby of Broadway,” “You’ll Never Know,” and “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.”
Warren was co-writer of standards including “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “September in the Rain,” “Jeepers Creepers,” and “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby.”
Despite the variety of dates he has lined up, Feinstein told Playbill he doesn't stick with one single set list. “I customize every single song list uniquely for each show and keep my synapses very busy. Often it’s a theme show if it’s part of my series for Jazz at Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall and I’ll choose the theme and then set out to create an interesting list of songs, both new and classic.”
Feinstein said he’s looking forward to his 2017 globe-hopping itinerary. “This summer is one filled with a lot of activity and many different kinds of shows and that has me very happy. Creating music and art in this time is keenly important, and as I travel to England and Australia I am mindful that bringing something positive from our country is important. Music is a good will ambassador. I love my summer conducting gig with the Pasadena Pops and am most excited about presenting some world premiere performances of some vintage orchestrations that have never been played publicly, written by such diverse composers as Dimitri Tiomkin, Victor Young, and Bronislau Kaper. Then there’s the Gershwin shows, the BBC Tribute to Harry Warren, and of course my annual summer singing gig at Feinstein’s/54 Below, to make sure that my musical expression will be as schizophrenic as ever!”
