New York City's Met Opera launches its 2022-23 season September 27 with Cherubini's Medea, with Sondra Radvanovsky starring in the title role. The production is the work's premiere staging at the Met, co-produced with Greek National Opera, Canadian Opera Company, and Lyric Opera of Chicago.

In addition to playing to a live audience at the Met's Lincoln Center stage, the September 27 performance will be broadcast live to outdoor audiences in Times Square and Marcus Garvey Park. Both screenings are free, with a pre-show broadcast at 5:30 PM and the opera at 6 PM.

The performance will also live stream audio-only to SiriusXM on the Metropolitan Radio Channel, and via MetOpera.org.

Joining Radvanovsky in the cast are Janai Brugger as Glauce, Ekaterina Gubanova as Neris, Matthew Polenzani as Giasone, and Michele Pertusi as Creonte.

David McVicar has staged the new production and serves as scenic designer with costumes by Doey Lüthi, projections by S. Katy Tucker, lighting by Paule Constable, and movement by Jo Meredith. With Carlo Rizzi at the podium, the production has performances scheduled through October 28.

The seldom-performed 1797 opera retells the seminal Greek myth of a woman who takes revenge on her unfaithful lover by murdering their two children. The title role was one of opera legend Maria Callas' signature roles.

The Met's production is sung in Italian, with captions available in English, German, and Spanish.
