The 2019 Met Gala summoned celebrities from every arena to honor the Costume Institute’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The party of the year invited stars to dress to theme and don their campiest looks; of course, theatre’s biggest stars nailed it.
READ: Inside Billy Porter’s 2019 Met Gala Look
As Tony Award winner Billy Porter told Playbill, camp is “the highest height.” Camp is completely over the top, but aware that it is completely over the top. It’s putting a hat on a hat (as Janelle Monae did literally). Camp is excess for the sake of excess and taking joy in that excess; camp signifies that nothing matters and everything matters. “It’s about taking something that’s real and honest and authentic for yourself and pushing it as far as it can go,” Porter said. And in his Sun God look, he felt powerful, sexy, and “ovah!”
But Porter wasn’t the only Broadway star to come out to play. Bette Middler, Darren Criss, Michael Urie, the quintet from Ain’t Too Proud, producers Jordan Roth and Ryan Murphy, playwright Danai Gurira, and more all showed up to show out. Take a look at their fashion moments below.
