Broadway favorites Megan Hilty and Jessie Mueller will play country legends Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, respectively, in an upcoming Lifetime original movie. The biopic, titled Patsy & Loretta, will be directed by Nashville’s Callie Khouri and executive produced by Neil Meron, according to TVLine.
The film, exploring the friendship between the two up through Cline's untimely death in 1963, is slated to begin production in Nashville later this month; a late 2019 premiere date will be announced later.
Hilty earned a Tony nomination for her most recent Broadway outing, in the 2016 revival of Noises Off. She has also starred on stage as Glinda in Wicked and in 9 to 5 as Doralee, portrayed on screen by another country legend: Dolly Parton (who penned the score to the musical). On screen, Hilty is known for her performance as Ivy Lynn in Smash, produced by Meron with the late Craig Zadan.
Mueller won the Tony in 2014 for taking on the role of music superstar Carole King in Beautiful. She has since appeared on Broadway in Waitress and Carousel, earning subsequent Tony nods for both. She made her feature film debut in The Post.
The country music industry is also making its way to the stage as a musical adaptation of Khouri's TV series Nashville is reportedly in the works.
