Following a workshop presentation earlier this year, performances are underway for the Fellowship for Performing Arts’ fully staged production of Martin Luther on Trial. The new play, which began performances Off-Broadway December 2, places Luther before a witness panel that includes Martin Luther King Jr., Adolf Hitler, Sigmund Freud, Rabbi Josel, St. Paul, and Pope Francis. Luther's wife defends him and the Devil prosecutes.
Martin Luther on Trial is written by Chris Cragin-Day and FPA artistic director Max McLean. The production is directed by Michael Parva at the Pearl Theatre, located at 555 West 42nd Street. It will officially open December 14.
The cast features Mark Boyett (A Play on Words), Kersti Bryan (Good Afternoon), Jamil A.C. Mangan (Mother Courage and Her Children), Fletcher McTaggart (Leap of Faith), John Michalski (The Winter’s Tale), and Paul Schoeffler (Rock of Ages).
“As 2017 marks 500 years since Luther ignited the Protestant Revolt against Rome, he continues to spark intense debate,” read FPA production notes. Performances are scheduled to run through January 29, 2017.
Martin Luther on Trial features set design by Kelly James Tighe, lighting design by Geoffrey D. Fishburn, costume design by Nicole Wee, and original music and sound design by Quentin Chiappetta. The production manager is Drew Francis, and the stage manager is Elizabeth Ann Goodman.
