News Maria Friedman Joins Julian Ovenden for The Sound of Music Live TV Broadcast The classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music is again headed for the small screen. Following NBC's 2013 live broadcast starring Carrie Underwood as Maria, U.K.'s ITV will broadcast its own "The Sound of Music Live!" this holiday season.

As previously reported, the cast will be led by Kara Tointon ("Mr. Selfridge") as Maria, the role created onstage by Mary Martin and later preserved on screen by Julie Andrews, with Julian Ovenden (Show Boat, "Downton Abbey") as Captain Georg von Trapp, Katherine Kelly as Baroness Elsa Schraeder and Alexander Armstrong as Max Detweiler.

Deadline.com reports that new additions to the cast include Olivier winner Maria Friedman, who made her Broadway debut in The Woman in White, as the Mother Abbess; Mel Giedroyc, who will play Frau Schmidt; and Evelyn Hoskins, David Bamber, Claire Oberman and Paul Jesson.

A broadcast date has yet to be announced.

The creative team for the ITV Studios production will include creative director Coky Giedroyc, Tony winner Martin Koch as musical director and Richard Valentine as the live TV director. Executive producers are André Ptaszynski, Lee Connolly and Fiona Clark.

The Sound of Music has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, and is suggested by "The Trapp Family Singers" by Maria Augusta Trapp.
