Singer, actor, and producer Marc Anthony will play Sonny's father in the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes' Tony-winning musical, In the Heights. The Warner Bros. project, directed by Jon M. Chu and featuring a screenplay by Hudes, has begun shooting in Washington Heights for a June 2020 release.
The role of Sonny's father, which wasn't featured in the stage musical, is described by Miranda as a "brief but pivotal" one. Anthony, who made his Broadway debut in The Capeman in 1998, has been seen in the films Man on Fire and El cantante, as well as in the series, Hawthorne. He is a two-time Grammy Award and six-time Latin Grammy Award winner for his achievements in music.
