News Mack Is Back: The Threepenny Opera Begins at Jean Cocteau Repertory, Aug. 29 Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's musical The Threepenny Opera kicks off the new season for Jean Cocteau Repertory Aug. 29 at the company's downtown home at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre.

Jean Cocteau Rep producing artistic director David Fuller directs the work from the Marc Blitzstein translation. The musical features the book and lyrics of Brecht with the music of Weill. Charles Berigan handles musical direction.

Set in London in the 1800s, the classic tuner concerns a notorious bandit who marries a girl to the chagrin of her father. The peeved patriarch does everything in his power to imprison his son-in-law in this political and social satire.

Featured in the cast are Natalie Ballesteros, Harris Berlinsky, Danny Dempsey, Eileen Glenn, Abe Goldfarb, Angus Hepburn, Kate Holland, Brian Lee Huynh, Marlene May, Sara Mayer, Timothy McDonough, Joey Piscopo, Elise Stone, Amy Lee Williams and Chad Suitts as Macheath.

Playing in rep with Threepenny will be the classic Lysistrata, Oct. 24 Feb. 5, 2004. Adapter David Lee Jiranek also directs the Greek comedy in which the sick-of-war Athenian women withhold sex from their warring husbands to stop the battle with Sparta.
