The matinee performance Jan. 29 at the Royale was scotched, as was the Jan. 28 show, due to actor Carl Gordon's hospitalization for a broken blood vessel in his leg. Gordon, who plays the role of Cutler, was rushed to the emergency room on doctor's orders after experiencing severe leg pain earlier in the day on Tuesday. The producers of the Broadway revival of August Wilson's play canceled the 7 PM Tuesday Jan. 28 preview performance because the understudy, Helmar Augustus Cooper, did not have sufficient rehearsal time. A lack of preparation for understudies is typical in previews, when understudies get less attention — or none at all — in favor of the main cast.
Performances with understudy Cooper will resume 8 PM Jan. 29, and Carl Gordon is expected to return to the 8 PM Friday performance Jan. 31. He will be released from the hospital Jan. 29, a spokesman said.
