London's National Theatre is marking the 10th anniversary of their Black Plays Archive by taking it online, with a new website that catalogues the first professional productions of Black British, African, and Caribbean plays produced in the U.K. dating back to 1909.
The archive includes more than 850 plays from more than 300 playwrights, including Una Marson's Pocomania, Errol John's Moon on a Rainbow, and more.
Available in the collection are video and audio recordings of extracts from the archives works, a bibliography of essays on Black British theatre, and video interviews with industry professionals and academics. Search capabilities allow users to search based on cast and creative teams, venues, and more.
"The Black Plays Archive is such a valuable resource that heralds work from Black British, African, and Caribbean playwrights in Britain," says the National's Deputy Artistic Director Clint Dyer in a statement. "The range of resources offered not only makes us aware of the history and cultural influence of Black British theatre but can also enable users to find ways to program more global majority work. The National Theatre is delighted to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Black Plays Archive with the launch of this new platform, making it even easier to explore and access the range of brilliant work available."
The resource is free to access online at BlackPlaysArchive.org.uk.
