London's Bridge Theatre, which scored a hit with its recent, immersive production of Guys and Dolls, will next tackle the classic Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Into the Woods.
Directed by Jordan Fein and designed by Tom Scutt, previews will begin December 2 for a 20-week run that will continue through April 18, 2026. Casting and additional creative team members will be announced at a later date.
Nicholas Hytner, co-founder of The Bridge, said in a statement, "Into the Woods is one of the great achievements of the American stage. Jordan Fein's production of Fiddler on the Roof at the Open Air Theatre last year was a triumph, beautifully staged and overwhelmingly moving, and Tom Scutt has established himself across the world as a designer of rare talent and imagination."
Sondheim and Lapine’s collaboration—their second, after Sunday in the Park With George—weaves together Brothers Grimm fairytales with the addition of a baker and his wife on their quest to reverse a curse of childlessness.
With a book and direction by Lapine and a score by Sondheim, Into the Woods originally opened at Broadway's Martin Beck Theatre November 5, 1987, playing 765 performances before closing September 3, 1989. The original Broadway company boasted Bernadette Peters, Zien, Robert Westenberg, Joanna Gleason, Tom Aldredge, Barbara Bryne, Kim Crosby, Chuck Wagner, and Ben Wright. The musical won Tonys for Best Book, Best Score, and Best Actress in a Musical (Gleason). The Sondheim score features "Agony," "On the Steps of the Palace," "Children Will Listen," "Giants in the Sky," "No One Is Alone," and the title tune, among others.
In London the musical has had productions by Richard Jones (Phoenix
Theatre, 1990), John Crowley (Donmar, 1998), and Timothy Sheader (Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, 2010).
The London venue will also welcome the return of its immersive, hit production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream this summer, running May 31–August 23 with an official opening June 5. The cast will include JJ Feild (Little Disasters) as Oberon/Theseus, Susannah Fielding (The Merchant of Venice) as Titania/Hippolyta, Emmanuel Akwafo (For the Black Boys…) as Bottom, and David Moorst (Killing Eve), who returns to the role of Puck/Philostrate. Further casting is to be announced.
Hytner will again direct with production design by Bunny Christie (Evening Standard Theatre Award), costumes by Christina Cunningham, lighting by Bruno Poet, sound design by Paul Arditti, music by Grant Olding, and movement by Arlene Phillips. James Cousins is associate director and associate movement director.
A Midsummer Night's Dream was first produced at The Bridge in 2019. Its immersive format, which allows 400 people to stand close to the action with 670 seats wrapped around, enabled over 100,000 people to see the production. It was subsequently filmed by NTLive.
