Amas Musical Theatre will celebrate its 58th anniversary at its annual Gala Benefit May 11 at Penthouse 45. The celebratory evening will feature a 50th anniversary concert of the 1976 Broadway musical Bubbling Brown Sugar.

Jonathan S. Cerullo will direct a cast that includes Darlesia Cearcy, Darius de Haas, Carmen Ruby Floyd, Mel Johnson, Jr., Nicolas King, Doremshia Sumbry-Edwards, Anthony Wayne, Tony winner Lillias White, and Brittany Nicole Williams.

The creative team will also include associate director Brenda Braxton, choreographer Maria Torres, music director Darnell White, and stage manager Brian Westmoreland.

Attendees will be transported into Rosie’s Place, a speakeasy cabaret setting for the benefit. The evening will begin at 6 PM with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres curated by special guest Carla Hall, followed by the 7:30 PM concert performance.

“Bubbling Brown Sugar put Amas on the map. It was written by Loften Mitchell and our own Rosetta LeNoire as a celebration of the spirit and music of Harlem,” says Artistic Producer Donna Trinkoff in a statement. “In fact, we were introduced to Carla Hall because in interviews she mentioned Bubbling Brown Sugar as her favorite show, so we reached out to her and are thrilled that she can be with us. We are creating a cabaret environment in this lovely penthouse with beautiful city views to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of this seminal show with a cadre of top of the line Broadway talent.

Bubbling Brown Sugar, based on a concept by Rosetta LeNoire with a book by Loften Mitchell and musical direction by Danny Holgate, was Tony-nominated for Best Musical, Leading Actress in a Musical (for Vivian Reed), and Choreography (Billy Wilson). A cast album preserves the hit revue. The Tony-nominated musical includes such songs as "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Take The 'A' Train," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "It Don’t Mean a Thing" "Ain't Misbehavin'," and "Bubbling Brown Sugar!"

The evening will benefit Amas Musical Theatre’s education and theatre programs. Original star Reed is the honorary chair for the benefit.
