In an interview with The Stage, Schonberg said, "Martin Guerre is ready. Alain just needs to meet with Cameron [Mackintosh] and spend a full day with him to listen to the new version. Once we find time with Cameron, it’s okay [to go]."

Martin Guerre's original West End production ran from 1996-98 at the Prince Edward Theatre. A rewritten version opened at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 1999. A 2007 production, which was staged at the Watermill Theatre, included further rewrites to the material. 

The musical is loosely based on the real-life historical figure Martin Guerre and the 1982 film "The Return of Martin Guerre."

In a 2014 BBC interview with Graham Norton, producer Mackintosh said that the Les Misérables and Miss Saigon writers had returned to work on Martin Guerre, which underwent major rewrites during its London premiere and was later revised for a U.S. and U.K. tour.

"We all decided that this was the time to go back to it after ten years," Mackintosh said. "We get lots of requests to do the show because it's got some of Claude-Michel's greatest music in it. They are now absolutely in the final stretch of having a completely rethought version of it, which will hopefully be ready next year." This new take has been described as a "completely new version" of the musical.
