Laura Benanti and Christine Baranski Battle It Out as the More Convincing Melania Trump | Playbill

Video Laura Benanti and Christine Baranski Battle It Out as the More Convincing Melania Trump The Tony-winning actors appeared on The Late Show amidst conspiracy theories of a body double for the First Lady.

In recent weeks, a 2017 rumor has resurfaced that a body double has appeared in the place of Melania Trump at a number of Trump’s public appearances.

To address this rumor, Stephen Colbert welcomed regular Melania impersonator Laura Benanti to come on the show (as Melania). “Why would anyone impersonate Melania Turmp? For what? Attention? Applause? Besides, it would take some kind of Tony Award-winning actor to pull of this role,” she said.

But when Benanti as Melania exited and “Melania” returned she looked a lot more like Christine Baranski. Colbert asked if she was an imposter. “Of course not,” said Baranski in costume, “Why would anyone impersonate Melania Trump, especially after someone else has really already made that role her own? It would take some kind of two-time Tony Award-winning actor to pull that off.”

Benanti earned her Tony Award in 2008 for Gypsy; Baranski picked up her trophies in the '80s for The Real Thing and Rumors.
