The production — created and written by Rick Najera — comes to Broadway after touring the country the past few years; it won the 2004 Imagen Award for Best Live Theatrical Production. "It's comedy with a universal appeal with a Latin flavor," says creator Najera.
Latinologues, performed in English, will play a limited 12-week engagement through Dec. 4. The Broadway company comprises Najera, Eugenio Derbez, Rene Lavan and Shirley A. Rumierk. Cheech Marin directs.
Najera, a comedy writer for such shows as "MAD TV" and "In Living Color," created Latinologues as a showcase for Latino talent. Since its inception, the production has employed more than 70 different actors, including Erik Estrada, Geraldo Rivera, Maria Conchita Alonso, Mario Lopez and Cristian De La Fuente. The work has been seen at South Coast Repertory Theater in Costa Mesa and the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago as well as in San Diego, Los Angeles, Houston, Las Vegas and Miami.
Latinologues plays Tuesday-Friday evenings at 8 PM, Saturdays at 5 and 9 PM and Sundays at 3 and 7 PM. Tickets are available by calling (212) 239-6200. The Helen Hayes Theatre is located at 240 West 44th Street.
