The Korea Musical Theater Association announced that the production received the most prestigious prize among 25 musicals that have been staged between May 2014-April 20, 2015.
Kang Hong-seok, who played Lola (the role originated by Tony winner Billy Porter) in the musical, also received the Best Lead Actor award. Jeon Mi-do, who played Girl in Once, took home the Best Actress of the Year award. Seven musical experts participated in the award's jury.
The Korean-language production officially opened Dec. 5, 2014, at the Chungmu Art Hall Grand Theatre in Seoul, Korea.
Based on the 2005 film of the same title, the Northampton, U.K.-set musical has a new book by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein (Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, Newsies) and a score by Grammy and Tony Award-winning "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" hit-maker and "True Colors" songwriter Lauper.
Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (2004's La Cage aux Folles, Legally Blonde, Catch Me If You Can), who created the high-energy dances that sent audiences and cast members into a frenzy during Hairspray, directs and choreographs Kinky Boots, which is bedazzled with a series of show-stopping numbers by the character of Lola and a bevy of drag performers.
