KC Rep artistic director Eric Rosen stages the production that will continue through April 6.
Walsh (Company, Falsettos) portrays Sonia in a cast that also features Tom Aulino as Vanya, Mary Beth Fisher as Masha, Zach Andrews as Spike, Emily Peterson as Nina and Vanessa Severo as Cassandra.
It is a co-production with Baltimore Center Stage, which will present the comedy April 16-May 25. Walsh, Andrews and Peterson will transfer with the production.
The design team includes Donald Eastman (scenic design), Melissa Torchia (costume design), Victor En Yu Tan (lighting design) and Joshua Horvath (sound design).
"Chekhov famously opined that his brooding, angst-filled plays were comedies, and Durang has shown the world that Chekhov was right," Rosen said in a statement. "Pulling characters from famous Chekhov plays and placing them in a contemporary Bucks County, PA crumbling family manse is absurd — and Durang is a master of the form. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a deeply funny, profoundly smart, and ultimately moving comedy, and I can't wait to share our co-production with the great audiences at Kansas City Rep and Center Stage."
Durang's play received six 2013 Tony Award nominations and won for Best Play.
Durang's plays include A History of the American Film (Tony nomination), Sister Mary Explains It All For You (Obie Award), Beyond Therapy, Baby With The Bathwater, The Marriage of Bette and Boo (Obie Award and Guild Hull Warriner Award), Sex and Longing, Laughing Wild, Betty's Summer Vacation (Obie Award), Miss Witherspoon (produced by McCarter Theatre Center, 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist) and Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them.
