Broadway alum and cabaret star Karen Akers plays a return performance at Birdland Jazz Club in New York City November 20.
The concert evening will be an encore performance of Water Under the Bridge, which Akers has played to sold-out crowds at Birdland twice previously. The song list focuses on the work that made Akers famous in the theatre and cabaret scene, including songs by Craig Carnelia, Maury Yeston, Edith Piaf, Stephen Sondheim, and more. Akers will be accompanied by music director Alex Rybeck.
Akers was Tony-nominated for her Broadway debut performance as Luisa Contini in the 1981 original production of Nine, making "My Husband Makes Movies" and "Be On Your Own" from the Yeston score among her trademark tunes. She returned to Broadway in 1989's Grand Hotel, reuniting with director Tommy Tune and songwriter Maury Yeston. On screen, she's appeared in Heartburn, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Vibes.
On the cabaret scene, Akers has released a number of solo albums, including Like It Was, Presenting Karen Akers, In a Very Unusual Way, Simply Styne, and If We Only Have Love. She won the 2005 New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Female Cabaret Vocalist in a Major Engagement and a 2009 Nightlife Legend Award.
