Theater for the New City is set to stage a return engagement of Michael A. Jones’ Josh: The Black Babe Ruth in honor of Black History Month. The play details the true story of legendary black baseball player Josh Gibson, from his struggles against institutional racism and his rise in the Negro League, to a messy love triangle and his untimely death.
Josh: The Black Babe Ruth premiered in TNC’s small Cabaret Theater last spring. The show will return to TNC, now in the larger Cino Theater, February 8–25. Bette Howard directs.
Dave Roberts will star as Josh, Daniel Danielson as fellow baseball player Satchel Paige, Daphne Danielle as Josh's wife, Hattie, and Charletta Rozell as Grace, Josh's mistress. Perci Prince plays the guitar and ensemble parts throughout the play.
Jones’ plays include It Takes a Village to Raise…Hell, produced by The Marian Holding Theatre; Family Matters, produced at Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company, and Angela's Justice, a play about Angela Davis that was presented as part of TNC's 2014 Dream Up Festival.
