News Johnny Guitar Will Pack Up Its Pistols May 16; Cast Album Planned Johnny Guitar, the new Off-Broadway musical recent nominated for Drama Desk, Drama League and Lucille Lortel awards, will close May 16, after 79 performances, the producers announced May 6.

The show is based in the film that starred Joan Crawford as a gun-slinger in the Old West. A cast album will be recorded May 17, and the show is expected to have a regional life.

Both Steve Blanchard, who created the title role while on leave from Beauty and the Beast, and his replacement and current "Johnny" Christopher Carl, will record tracks for the album. A distribution deal for the CD will be announced shortly with a late June release date anticipated.

"We are grateful to the New York theatre community and audiences who ventured Off-Broadway to embrace our show and its talented cast," said co-producer Mark Kress, in a statement. "We are negotiating now for the first of many regional and international productions and look forward to Johnny Guitar's long life at home and abroad."

Directed by Joel Higgins, Johnny Guitar features Judy McLane, Christopher Carl, Ann Crumb, Robert Evan, Ed Sala, Robb Sapp, David Sinkus, Jason Edwards and Brian Minyard and includes set by Van Santvoord, lighting by Ed McCarthy, costumes by Kaye Voyce and sound by Laura Grace Brown. Musical direction is by James Mironchik, book is by Nicholas van Hoogstraten. Music is by Martin Silvestri and lyrics and music by Joel Higgins.

The musical is presented by Definite Maybe Productions and Mark Kress in association with Victoria Lang & Pier Paolo Piccoli and the Century Center. Johnny Guitar was honored with the 2004 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical.

The show received Drama Desk nominations for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Judy McLane); a nom for Distinguished Production of a Musical by The Drama League, who also recognized Judy McLane for her performance; and a nom for Outstanding Musical by the Lucille Lortel Awards.
