The Broadway premiere of John Lithgow: Stories by Heart opens January 11 at the American Airlines Theatre following previews that began December 21, 2017. The solo show in two acts from two-time Tony winner and Oscar nominee John Lithgow is inspired by his personal life and career.
In Stories by Heart, Lithgow traces his roots as an actor and storyteller, working classic short stories by P. G. Wodehouse and Ring Lardner—read to him as a child—into his own narrative.
The Broadway premiere of the monologue play marks the culmination of the show’s development over several years. The evening of storytelling was first presented at Lincoln Center Theater in 2008 with direction by Jack O’Brien before heading to theatres across the country whenever the actor’s schedule could allow.
Stories by Heart on Broadway is directed by Daniel Sullivan and is playing a limited engagement through March 4.
The design team includes set designer John Lee Beatty, costume designer Jess Goldstein, sound designer Peter Fitzgerald, and lighting designer Kenneth Posner.
Lithgow was last seen on Broadway in 2014 opposite Glenn Close in Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance. He is a two-time Tony Award winner for his performances in Sweet Smell of Success and The Changing Room. He is also a two-time Academy Award nominee for the films Terms of Endearment and The World According to Garp.
