“My Broadway debut, at age 27, was March 7, 1973 and I won a Tony Award on March 25,” Lithgow recalls on the red carpet. “I must have the record for the quickest award following a Broadway debut in history.”
That year, Lithgow received the Best Featured Actor in a Play Tony for The Changing Room; in 2002 he won for Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Sweet Smell of Success. He has also been nominated four other times.
