Tony Awards John Lithgow Recalls His Broadway Debut on the Tony Awards Red Carpet The two-time Tony winner discuss his “anxiety free” role in the 71st Tony Awards.

Prior to announcing the winner for Best Play at the 71st Tony Awards June 11, John Lithgow (a two-time Tony winner himself) walked the red carpet to discuss his Broadway debut 44 years ago.

“My Broadway debut, at age 27, was March 7, 1973 and I won a Tony Award on March 25,” Lithgow recalls on the red carpet. “I must have the record for the quickest award following a Broadway debut in history.”

That year, Lithgow received the Best Featured Actor in a Play Tony for The Changing Room; in 2002 he won for Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Sweet Smell of Success. He has also been nominated four other times.
