Pasadena Playhouse has released details about its upcoming 2024-2025 season, which will include new stagings of Cyrano de Bergerac, La Cage aux Folles, and Topdog/Underdog, along with a pair of special concert events.
The first of those events will be Cole Porter's Anything Goes, to be performed in concert at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium January 24-25, 2025. Two-time RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon will star as Reno Sweeney, continuing a musical theatre stage career that has already seen her star in Chicago on Broadway and Little Shop of Horrors Off-Broadway. The concerts will feature Timothy Crouse and John Weidman's new book, adapted from the original by P.G. Wodehouse, Guy Bolton, Howard Lindsay, and Russel Crouse. Additional casting and creative team members are to be announced. The concerts are being presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Tams-Witmark.
The second will be a concert presentation of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's Follies, playing the Pasadena Civic Auditorium January 31-February 1. Casting is to be announced. The performances are being licensed by Music Theatre International.
As for the typical Playhouse season, Cyrano de Bergerac will kick things off September 4-29. The company is presenting the Martin Crimp-penned adaptation of the Edmond Rostand work, which premiered in London's West End starring James McAvoy in 2019, directed by Jamie Lloyd. Casting and creative team members for Pasadena's staging, which is not connected to the earlier London production, are to be announced. The work is licensed via Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French.
Next up will be a new revival of Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman's La Cage aux Folles, running November 12-December 15. Based on the same Jean Poiret play that was adapted for the screen as The Birdcage, the Tony-winning musical centers on a gay couple running a gay nightclub. When their son becomes engaged to the daughter of an ultra-conservative family, hijinks ensue. Concord Theatricals is licensing the production.
Closing out the season in spring 2025 will be Suzan-Lori Parks' Pulitzer-winning Topdog/Underdog, about two brothers named Lincoln and Booth by their father as a joke. Exact dates, casting, and creative team are all to be announced.
