Industry News Irish Repertory Theatre and Fishamble Form Transatlantic Residency

The partnership will culminate in staged readings for four playwrights in New York and Dublin.

CN Smith, Felispeaks, Jade Jordan, and Kwaku Fortune

The Irish Repertory Theatre and Fishamble: The New Play Company have formed a Transatlantic Residency, a follow-up to their previous Transatlantic Commissions Program.

The Transatlantic Commissions Program was founded in 2022 to address historical inequities in theatre. The two companies commissioned four Black Irish artists to create one short play each under the mentorship of Dael Orlandersmith. The new residency will help that program's playwrights—CN Smith, Felispeaks, Jade Jordan, and Kwaku Fortune—expand their works into full-length plays.

The writers have been working with dramaturgs Gavin Kostick and Nicola Murphy Dubey since February to expand on their plays, which will be presented as staged readings in New York and Dublin this summer. Jim Culleton and Dubey will direct the readings.

Readings of Fortune's The Black Wolfe Tone and Felispeaks' BENT! will be presented at the Irish Repertory Theatre June 17. The Off-Broadway company will host readings of Jordan's 89 and Smith's Corktown June 18. Additional readings will be held at Dublin's AXIS Theatre July 3 and 4.
