Well, just in case you needed any more indication that Broadway's Hamilton is, in fact, a megahit cultural phenomenon like little else Broadway has ever before seen, the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical's Broadway cast album was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) June 23. The album is the first-ever cast recording to achieve this certification, which marks 10 million verified purchases.
To put the success of the album into perspective, consider that its cast recording runner-up, the original Broadway cast album of Les Misérables, was most recently certified four-times multi-Platinum (meaning sales in excess of four million) in 1998, more than a decade after its original release. Hamilton's album achieved Platinum status (one million in sales) less than a year following its 2015 release, achieving both four- and five-times multi-Platinum in 2018. The release has also been successful as singles. Of the two-disc album's 46 tracks, six are individually two-times multi-Platinum, 22 are Platinum, and 18 are Gold (50,000 units sold).
The recording's Diamond certification places the release alongside fellow-Diamond certified albums Oops!...I Did It Again by Britney Spears and Elvis Presley's Christmas Album, among others.
The certification also marks the musical's continued dominance as the best-selling cast album of all time, a distinction it's held since 2018. Its closest competition is the Broadway cast album of Les Misérables, the London cast album of The Phantom of the Opera and its highlights release, the original London cast recording of My Fair Lady, and the Wicked Broadway album.
