The New York Times reports that a 50th anniversary celebration of Hair will take place the afternoon of January 21 at La MaMa. The musical originally opened on Broadway in April 1968, but premiered at the Public Theater October 1967 (hence the 50 years).
Presented as part of La MaMa’s Coffeehouse Chronicles series, the event will feature stories from creators Galt MacDermot and James Rado in addition to performances by original and revival company members.
Natalie Mosco, Allan Nicholls, the Reverend Marjorie Lipari, and Dale Soules are among the original cast members confirmed to participate. A never-before-heard demo of the title song will be played publicly for the first time, and, of course, audience members will hear “Aquarius,” “Donna,” “Frank Mills,” and more.
Producer Michael Butler is also sharing rare photos from his time with the production.
Admission is free (donations suggested), but advance reservations are required via LaMaMa.org.
