The 64th annual Drama Desk Awards was celebrated at Town Hall June 2. The event, hosted for the fourth year by Torch Song’s Michael Urie, honored outstanding achievement by professional theatre artists on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway.
Tootsie and Hadestown led the pack for musicals. Tootsie took home awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics for David Yazbek, as well as Outstanding Book of a Musical for David Horn, and Outstanding Actor in a Musical for Santino Fontana. Hadestown took home statues for Outstanding Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin, Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for André de Shields, as well as Outstanding Sound Design and Lighting Design. (Hadestown was only eligible for “those elements that constituted new work,” excluding its book and score, due to its previous Off-Broadway run in 2016.) The Prom took home the top prize for Outstanding Musical.

The Drama Desk is an organization of writers, editors, publishers, and broadcasters covering theatre in New York City. The awards are the only major theatre honors for which productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway compete in the same categories.
The holiday comedy from the Play That Goes Wrong creators brings the chaos and humor of The Cornley Amateur Drama Society to the work of Charles Dickens.
