Mark Rosenblatt’s Olivier winning play Giant hosts Playwrights’ Night On Broadway March 17.

The special performance brings together 75 New York-based playwrights, ranging from emerging to established, to celebrate bold original work on Broadway. The producers have partnered with New York Theatre Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, Dramatists Guild of America, the Dramatists Guild Foundation, and London's Royal Court to cultivate community and conversation surrounding the production, and the effort of creating new work.

“I wrote Giant on spec, in my kitchen, not knowing if I was a playwright at all," said Rosenblatt. “The belief of a brilliant director in my idea got me started and the support and generosity of other playwrights—friends who read and fed back and drove me forward. That sense of community was everything. Without them I wouldn’t have got to premiere it at the Royal Court—the ultimate community for international new writing—and I wouldn’t be here today in this dreamiest of moments on Broadway. I’m so honored to be able to share my journey with a yet wider community of brilliant, visionary writers here in this great city.”

The play, which began previews at the Music Box Theatre March 11, stars John Lithgow as children's book author Roald DahlGiant will officially open March 23. Two-time Tony winner Nicholas Hytner is at the helm after staging the work's U.K. premiere.

Lithgow reprises his Olivier-winning performance from the play's West End run, alongside fellow London cast members Elliot Levey, reprising his Olivier-winning performance as Dahl's Jewish publisher, Tom Maschler; Aya Cash (The Boys) as U.S. publisher Jessie Stone; and Rachael Stirling as Felicity Crosland.

They are supported by Stella Everett (Running Point) as Hallie and David Manis (To Kill a Mockingbird) as Wally, along with understudies Geoffrey Cantor (The Lehman Trilogy), Annie Hägg (Hunters), Eleanor Handley (Unforgettable), and Paul O'Brien (Six Degrees of Separation). Casting is by Daniel Swee.

The play comes on the heels of a broader cultural conversation about Dahl's work and the prejudice that was embedded in many of his stories. In 2023, hundreds of words in Dahl's books were either altered or omitted from future printings in order to remove countless negative references to race, skin color, ethnicity, gender, disabilities, and more.

The production also features scenic and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Anna Watson, sound design by Darron L West, wig, hair, and makeup design by Campbell Young Associates, and production management by Juniper Street Productions.

Lithgow is a Tony winner for his performances in The Changing Room and Sweet Smell of Success.

Brian and Dayna Lee, Stephanie Kramer and Nicole Kramer, Josh Fiedler and Robyn Goodman, and Royal Court Theatre are producing the transfer.
