Gary Busey will step into the role of serial killer Lionel McAuley in the long-running staging of Warren Manzi’s murder mystery Perfect Crime, marking the Oscar and Golden Globe nominee’s Off-Broadway debut.
Busey will join the cast of New York City’s longest-running play for two weeks only from November 21-December 4 at The Theater Center. He will star opposite Catherine Russell, a Guinness Book World Record holder for having never taken a sick day in the show’s 30-year history and who has spent nearly 24,000 hours onstage performing in Perfect Crime.
“Our Playwright Warren Manzi who died earlier this year would have been so thrilled that Gary is playing Lionel McAuley – it’s perfect casting,” commented executive producer Armand Hyatt in a statement.
With “Agatha Christie-like twists and turns,” Perfect Crime follows a psychiatrist who is suspected of killing her rich husband, the detective trying to solve the case and the psychiatrist’s troubled patient. The current cast also includes Richard Shoberg (All My Children), Hugh Hysell, David Butler and Patrick Robustelli. Jay Cail Stone is technical director.
Busey has appeared in over 150 films spanning four decades, with credits that include Point Break, Lethal Weapon and The Buddy Holly Story, which garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in 1978.
