News Fugard's Coming Home to Feature Domingo, Ruff and Ferguson at Long Wharf Colman Domingo, Roslyn Ruff and Lou Ferguson will head the cast of the Long Wharf Theatre's world premiere of Athol Fugard's Coming Home.

As previously reported, Long Wharf artistic director Gordon Edelstein will helm Fugard's latest work, which is scheduled to begin performances Jan. 14, 2009, and continue through Feb. 8, 2009. Coming Home will officially open Jan. 21, 2009, on the company's Mainstage.

(Coming Home replaces the previously announced double-bill of Fugard's Victory and Valley Song that had been scheduled to play the same time slot.)

Domingo (Passing Strange, "Miracle at St. Ana"), Ruff (Kennedy Center Jitney) and Ferguson (Drowning Crow, Two Trains Running) will be joined onstage by Namunba Santos and Mel Eichler.

Coming Home, according to press notes, "is the story of Veronica Jonkers, a young woman who left her beloved grandfather's farm to pursue her dreams of a singing career in Cape Town. Carrying a painful secret and a heart full of disappointment, she returns after his death and strives to plant the seeds of a new life for her young son."

The Long Wharf design team includes Tony-winning set designer Eugene Lee, costume designer Jessica Ford, lighting designer Stephen Strawbridge and sound designer Corrine Livinston. Edelstein and designer Eugene Lee both traveled to Fugard's hometown of Nieu Bethesda, South Africa to research the play. "It gave me the opportunity to see first hand what Fugard is really talking about. Athol assured me that I would see many of the characters in the play wandering around the streets of New Bethesda," Edelstein said in a statement.

Fugard's plays include Bloodknot, Boesman and Lena, Sizwe Bansi is Dead, The Island, Master Harold and the Boys, My Children! My Africa!, Exits and Entrances, Victory, Bootjie and the Oubaas and Visions and Dreams.
