New York Theatre Barn is planning an October 6 event to celebrate "innovative creativity in musical theatre" by honoring three people who have made impacts on the company over its 18-year history. To be held at Gotham Comedy Club, the event will honor Florencia Cuenca (Real Women Have Curves), Debra Barsha (Radiant Baby), and Jeff Calhoun (Newsies).
Barsha will receive the Impact Award. NYTB previously participated in the development of her musicals Boy Meets Girl and The Helena Project. Calhoun will receive the Culture Shifter Award, after work with the company on A Complicated Woman and Everyone Comes to Elaine's. Cuenca, most recently of Broadway's Real Women Have Curves, will receive the Emerging Artist Award. Cuenca was part of the company's inaugural Barn on Fire residency on Fire Island, where she worked on Sueños: Our American Musical.
The October 6 event will have an in-person audience and stream live. Proceeds will benefit the company's work developing new works from underrepresented communities.
