Elevator Repair Service's Gatz is returning to Off-Broadway's Public Theater, and has found the full cast for the upcoming run. Performances begin November 1 ahead of a November 8 opening night, with the run set to continue through December 1.
The work, which uses the complete and unabridged text of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby as its script over its eight-hour running time (including a two-hour intermission and several smaller breaks), played two earlier runs at the Public, in 2010 and 2012. The upcoming encore staging, described in press notes as its "Final NYC Encore," will be the piece's first since the source material passed into public domain in 2021.
Casting, which features a number of alum from the production's earlier stagings, will include Laurena Allan, Frank Boyd, Jim Fletcher, Ross Fletcher, Maggie Hoffman, Mike Iveson, Vin Knight, Annie McNamara, Scott Shepherd, Pete Simpson, Susie Sokol, Tory Vazquez, and Ben Jalosa Williams.
The production will feature direction by John Collins, scenic design by Louisa Thompson, costume design by Colleen Werthmann, lighting design by Mark Barton, and sound design by Ben Jalosa Williams. Mo Lioce will be production stage manager, and Jack Ganguly will be stage manager.
"The whole Gatz company is utterly thrilled to be returning to The Public Theater, a home for Elevator Repair Service and especially for Gatz for 14 years,” says Collins in a statement. “This run is a celebration, not just of our most successful show, but of the most fruitful and welcoming partnership in our 33-year history.”
“Gatz is one of the most thrilling, beautiful, and unique pieces of theatre we have ever produced," adds Public Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. "After its initial run in 2010, we were forced to bring it back in a larger theatre for a longer run, and it is now returning for an unprecedented third (and final!) time. After almost 20 years of performances, the Gatz ensemble will take its final bows in New York City, so this may be your last chance to see one of the defining theatre pieces of this century. Don't miss it!”
