Times may be hard, but there is still joy to be found, even after a long week. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a moment of emotional release. Welcome to Playbill's Feel Good Friday feature.
Tissue Alert: If you are sentimental so-and-so like most of the Playbill staff, this one might hit you straight in the tear ducts.
Captured on film by a friend, performer Rob Madge—who will make their Broadway debut this spring with the autobiographical solo show My Son's a Queer (But What Can You Do?)—recently saw their show title on the Lyceum Theatre marquee for the very first time. And it was quite an emotional rollercoaster from shock to tears. "A moment I will never, ever forget," Madge said in the caption of the Instagram post sharing the video. (See the post below.)
The show centers on Madge at age 12 as they attempt to create a full scale Disney parade in their house for their grandmother. Previews begin February 27 and opening night is set for March 12.
The text in the video reads: "Seeing my show above its Broadway theatre for the first time. When I was a kid I used to put on shows for my family. These were all documented on VHS tapes which I started sharing on here in 2020. I then wrote my solo show My Son's a Queer in response to people saying they wished their parents had been more supportive of their identity. We first put it on in June 2021 Off-West End. We then took it to Edinburgh Fringe last August and went on to transfer to the West End. At the Fringe, I met three incredible Broadway producers (Tom Smedes, Heather Shields and Peter Stern) and...here we are. Thank you all so much for your continued support. Gonna make my Broadway debut I guess! MY SON'S A QUEER (BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO) OPENS AT THE LYCEUM THEATRE NEXT SPRING ❤️"
Welcome to the neighborhood, Rob! We're glad you're here!
Have a great weekend, and check back next Friday for another feel good feature.
