Andrew Keenan-Bolger is officially a Brooklyn boy. A new resident of the borough, the Newsies star lived in New York for more than 15 years before visiting DUMBO, the waterfront neighborhood where he presently resides. His recent move to the community marks his first time as a Brooklynite, and with that comes plenty of opportunity to explore the neighborhood.
“That’s what I love about New York: you think you’ve seen it all, and then there is some neighborhood you haven’t discovered,” he gushes. Accompanied by his dog Archie, who is wearing a matching bandanna, the star is energetic and confident as we walk through the beautiful streets of DUMBO, playing with his puppy along the way. Despite the newness of the neighborhood, Keenan-Bolger seems like he’s right at home.
Though Keenan-Bolger now lives outside of Manhattan, the theatre veteran still relishes Broadway in the summer. “I think there is something ceremonial about sitting in an air-conditioned theatre, watching live theatre during the summer,” he explains. “I’ve done a lot of theatre for young audiences, and Broadway is such a great destination for parents to take their kids during the summer when they need an activity. You get some of your best audiences. I love performing in the summer on Broadway.”

“I think summer is the best season to experience New York.”

"I love DUMBO. It’s got this kind of nitty-gritty industrial charm of 19th century architecture mixed with this modern start-up vibe. I think there is a ton of culture and art here."
Keenan-Bolger hasn't been exploring Brooklyn alone. He's been accompanied by his new puppy Archie.
After admiring dogs from afar, moving to a dog-friendly building provided the Broadway star with the perfect opportunity to become a proud puppy owner. “It’s been amazing. I certainly have a lot of respect for any other dog owner, especially people who got them as puppies.”
One of the highlights from Keenan-Bolger's exploration has been the Archway, the public venue under the Manhattan Bridge. "Almost every night, they have either musicians or artist displaying work and so often, I’ve just been walking to the grocery store and happened upon some artist I’ve never heard of playing. It’s really cool."
“I think the heat forces everyone outdoors and it just becomes a melting pot of cultures and peoples. There is a lot to see."

"It seems like everywhere you turn, there is something going on. I think as far as experiences go in the city, for whatever reason, summer brings out the best ones."
"That’s what I love about New York: you think you’ve seen it all, and then there is some neighbor you haven’t discovered."
“I think [Dumbo has] the best view of the city possible – It’s funny that the best view of the city is after you leave it.”
