The play, according to press notes, "chronicles the life of Chavez after his death when he meets the late Los Angeles Times reporter, Ruben Salazar in the cafe where Salazar was tragically killed 23 years prior." Begley wrote, produced and directed the original production, which made its 2003 premiere at Hollywood's El Portal Theatre. Cesar and Ruben won a Nos Otros Award and four Valley Theater Awards while gaining enthusiastic support from the Cesar Chavez Foundation, the United Farm Workers and Chavez' widow and children.
