Mike Lemme's Before the Drugs Kick In, which made its world premiere at the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, will hold two Equity-approved showcases in New York City at the end of the month.
With the showcases, set for September 28 at 7 PM and September 29 at 1 PM at the UNDER St. Marks Theater, the production hopes to find the right creative and financial teams to bring the show Off-Broadway in the fall or winter.
Comedian and playwright Lemme wrote, directed, and produced Before the Drugs Kick In. The Fringe run received critical acclaim as well as nominations for the BBC Writersroom Popcorn Award for New Writing and the Mental Health Foundation Fringe Award.
Before the Drugs Kick in follows a 62-year-old woman in an insane asylum who closes her eyes and becomes a 28-year-old stand-up comedian, as the audience becomes a part of her imagination. The piece is dedicated to to young mothers of the 80s-early 2000s, whose mental health was often disregarded by society. Comedian and actor Maria DeCotis stars as Lynn T. Walsh.
