The 1982 Tony-nominated musical Dreamgirls has replaced the previously announced Caroline, or Change in McCarter Theatre Center's 2023-2024 season.
Directed by Jeff Award winner Lili-Anne Brown, the production will run March 6-24, 2024, in the Matthews Theatre. A co-production with Goodspeed Musicals, the musical will arrive in New Jersey following a November 10-December 30 engagement at Connecticut's Goodspeed.
“Dreamgirls is a joyous, inspirational, dramatic celebration of music that audiences will absolutely love,” says McCarter Artistic Director Sarah Rasmussen. “And with Lili-Anne Brown directing? You may well come back twice.”

Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's Dreamgirls won six Tony Awards in its 1982 Broadway premiere. The late Michael Bennett took home the award for Best Choreography alongside collaborator Michael Peters. Jennifer Holliday memorably created the role of Effie to Tony-winning effect, stopping the show nightly with "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." The 2006 film, adapted and directed by Bill Condon, earned Jennifer Hudson the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for her portrayal of Effie.
