Karen Zacarías's Destiny of Desire begins performances at The Old Globe May 19, to run through June 25.
An homage to telenovelas, the play follows two babies born on a stormy night in Bellarica, Mexico, one into outlandish wealth and one into a life of poverty. When the newborns are swapped by a ruthless ex–beauty queen, the stage is set for two outrageous misfortunes to grow into an extraordinary destiny.
Directed by Tony winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Destiny of Desire stars Julio Agustín as Dr. Jorge Ramiro Mendoza, Yesenia Ayala as Pilar Esperanza Castillo, Carlos Gomez as Ernesto Del Rio, Mandy Gonzalez as Hortencia Del Rio, Ariella Kvashny as La Gente, Tito Livas as Dr. Diego Mendoza, Bianca Marroquín as Fabiola Castillo, James Olivas as Sebastián Jose Castillo, Christopher M. Ramirez as La Gente, Al Rodrigo as Armando Castillo, Emilia Suárez as Victoria Maria Del Rio, and Nancy Ticotin as Sister Sonia. Rounding out the company as understudies are Tara Martinez and Luis Villabon.
In addition to director Santiago-Hudson and playwright Zacarías, the creative team features choreography by Lorna Ventura; original music, music supervision, orchestrations, and music direction by Ricky Gonzalez; scenic design by Rachel Hauck; costume design by Karen Perry; lighting design by Jane Cox; sound design by Robert Kaplowitz; and projection design by Hana S. Kim. ARC provides casting, and James Latus serves as production stage manager.
