The 66th Annual Obie Awards will be held February 27 at Terminal 5 in NYC. Recognizing the best in Off- and Off-Off-Broadway theatre, the ceremony will be the first in-person event for the awards since the pandemic, and the first Obie ceremony of any kind since 2020. Consequently, the event will include performances from productions that opened Off-Broadway in the last two years.
“I am so grateful to our judges panel for accepting the challenge of expanding the definition of what ‘Off and Off-Off-Broadway’ can mean, and doing so with such care and enthusiasm,” says Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, which presents the Obies. “I am excited to create a ceremony that fully embraces and celebrates this remarkable new era of creativity.”
The 2023 awards are being co-chaired by Obie-winning director and producing artistic leader David Mendizábal and theatre critic Melissa Rose Bernardo. The panel of judges includes actor and fight choreographer Dave Anzuelo, actor and playwright Becca Blackwell, scenic designer Wilson Chin, Obie-winning playwright Lisa Peterson, Obie-winning actor Heather Alicia Simms, and Obie-winning costume designer Kaye Voyce.
The evening's host and other details will be announced in the coming weeks.
